Libération leads its front page with an encomium to Jonathan Franzen’s much-lauded novel Freedom, now translated into French, as the big opening event of the coming literary season. And more surprising still, Le Figaro gave a rave review to … “Captain America”!

            To wit: “With its vintage side, its beautiful American women, its futuristic architecture, its innocence and its naïve belief in scientific progress, the America of the 1940s [portrayed in the movie] still makes us dream. An excellent entertainment.”

            Otherwise, what you see is pretty much what you get at this kiosk on Avenue des Ternes below the Arc de Triomphe.

Le Parisien sums up the news of the day – the meeting between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel: “Above All, A Summit to Reassure.” With the much talked about “Eurobonds” not even on the agenda, we’ll have to listen to the official statements, then spend days or weeks deciphering the unofficial ones, before we know what’s really happening. Or maybe the markets will do that for us…

            Otherwise, most of the papers and most of their pages are in full summer vacation mode. Even the financial daily Les Echos is devoting two pages to a graphic novel soap opera. The lead story on the local pages of Le Parisien, meanwhile, is about the invasion of tuk-tuks, those little three-wheeled motorized rickshaws invented in Thailand, that now ply the streets among the tourist destinations of Paris.
